Current mood: working

A happy May Day to all my fellow workers out there. Now all you Americans; get back to your desks, machines, driver's seats, or other instruments of toil! These things won't operate themselves!

Happy Vappu Paaiva!

Vappu, closest holiday translation would be our Labor Day, is the day when all of Finland is drunk...I mean really drunk, everyone drinks until he/she runs out of money or is unable to swallow.

Vappu is the memorial day of Saint Labor, holiday of spring and university students and workers international festival- and demonstrationday. Vappu has been celebrated in Finland since 1890, but in many countries it has been paid day-off since 1918.

In Vappu people drink mead and eat May-day pastries. There's big festivals in streets and in market places with balloons, serpentines, masks, whisks, fart-gas and glowing condoms. People in all ages wear "graduation/student's cap" (think 1930's ship's captain's hat). Students gather around the statue in the biggest cities, washed it and put a cap on its head. It's odd, but any excuse to party right?
