Current mood: sleepy

There have been 17 new contractors to put in the system, a few non-contractors, and about seven or eight terminations today. That was about eighty percent of my day right there. I'm doing so much typing that my left wrist hurts even with the brace on. *sighs*

I went to a meeting today about a pre-paid legal plan for employees of my company. It's weird to do something that so integrates me into 'the machine', but I have now signed up for it. Who knows when I'll need legal representation for something? There have been several instances in the past when I might have used it, and heck, if we need to I can even use it fight the absurd fines that Andrea got hit with from the Ipass agency. I get a yearly will out of it too; that'll be kind of weird to fill out, but it's one of those thing that all the suit-and-tie bedecked grown-ups keep saying is a really good thing to have done. I get representation for traffic tickets, insurance claims, identity theft issues, injuries, and really, whatever I might need a lawyer for. I think that's worth the $25 a month. I may opt out of the identity theft protection and credit monitoring because that costs extra; that would make it even less expensive. What do you think?

*woof* It's been a long day. Wanna go home now.

I can see your tongue is hanging out. Time to curl up on a comfy couch.

As far as pre-paid legal, like all such things it is a throw of the dice. Anything significant happens and they will not cover it. One minor thing is probably covered by $25*12 at a reasonably priced lawyer. Most likely you are better off putting $300 in the bank. Force yourself to make the monthly payment to yourself, if you can. At the end of two years, take the extra $300 and do something fun.
I personally don't have the budget or discipline for this, but if you could manage it, it would be a very cool thing to do.

Thanks for the input; it's always worthwhile to get opinions from friends.

It sounds like they actually will cover some things of significance though. I get 60 hours in court my first year (though I think that only covers as a defendant) covered, 120 in my next year, and so on. It sounds like they'll write letters for me, answer legal questions, and that sort of thing. I think I may see how it goes for a while since it really is relatively inexpensive. Having never had legal advice before, I'll go for a few months and see how useful it really is. I can always cancel it later on, and I just might if it doesn't seem like I'll use it for much.

Prepaid legal is a dicey thing. Some are as bad as the rip-off "warranties" that an unscrupulous car dealership will sell with a 10-year-old car but refuse to honor. (Although there are some who do, too.)

Then there are the good ones. When threatened with annoyance lawsuits, Mercedes Lackey is in the habit of saying something to the effect of "Oh yeah, well try me! I have accumulated 1,000 hours of prepaid legal services! Bring it on!" That usually scares them off, and Misty isn't one to make threats she believes to be empty.

Having lived through my father's demise without a will, I can tell you it's better for those who survive you if you do have one. Too many families have been destroyed by survivors squabbling over the goods left behind, and it's often surprising who does squabble.

Google the plan's name, or the law firm involved's name, and see if you can dig up any dirt on them. The presence or absence of justified complaints will tell you all you can find about the plan's usefulness, short of actually needing it.

Thanks for the advice. Researching the company and lawfirm involved is a good idea and I will do so.
